Leader

I recently asked a group of corporate professionals what their biggest challenge is at their workplace.  There were many answers.  One of the answers jumped out at me.  This individual wanted to be taken seriously as a leader in their organization.

To be taken seriously as a leader in your organization, you must consistently show your leadership skills on a regular basis.  There are plenty of opportunities to show off these skills.  Following are some must have skills to be taken seriously as a leader.

Guilty

The definition of guilt is: an experience that occurs when a person believes that they have violated a moral standard.  My working definition is:  the bad feeling a person has when they believe they should be doing something else.

So many people seem to carry around guilt as a badge of honor.  When they’re at work, they feel they should be at home, when they’re at home they feel they should devote more time to work.  The operable word here is “should”.

Control

There are things in life you can control and a whole lot more you can’t.  It’s always a mystery to me how people get so frustrated trying to control things that aren’t in their control and will never be.  Lots of hours and energy could be redirected onto areas that they do have control over.

Volunteer Boards – Yeah! Or eeeek?

I work with a lot of organizations with a volunteer board of directors.  Volunteers can be an asset and a liability to any organization.  When the role of the volunteer is clearly defined and followed, the volunteer has a better chance of enhancing the organization.  If the roles aren’t clearly defined or a volunteer isn’t following their role, the organization can suffer greatly.
